Scholarship Description: The scholarship is a one-off reduction in your commencing tuition fees to the value of AUD$6000.

The scholarships are available for international students who have completed senior high school overseas equivalent to Queensland Year 12 (eg. A Levels, International Baccalaureate, etc). The scholarship is not available to students who have already commenced a postsecondary qualification or who are already studying in Australia. The successful applicants must be classed as an international student in Australia (Australian permanent residents and Australian citizens are not eligible).

Job description

Animals have been employed by humans for a variety of purposes and especially dogs have been trained to perform a wide range of tasks. In the twentieth century the training of working dogs gradually became more specialized and institutionalized. Crime-fighting dogs were trained for the police and war dogs were used (and misused) in the army; whilst search-and-rescue animals helped both soldiers and civilians. In these cases, the human-animal bond resembled an employer-employee relationship. In other cases, such as those of guide dogs, therapy dogs and other service dogs, the animals acted as close family members and significantly improved the quality of life for disabled people. The need to enhance these animals' suitability for such specialized purposes supplied scientists with useful research questions; in turn, dog breeders' and trainers' practices could benefit from the results of animal behaviour research. Different societal and cultural attitudes have also exerted an influence on the nature and extent of the reliance on working animals. Philanthropic associations have played a crucial role in raising funds for the provision of service dogs, whereas the training of police and army dogs has usually enjoyed state support.

Proposals are welcome that cover any aspect of the history of working dogs, the history of animal behaviour research with relevance to dog training; the history of charities supporting service dogs; problems of citizenship, gender, ethics, disability and their relevance to the history of the human-animal bond. Moreover, proposals on the history of working animals other than dogs will be considered as well.
Candidates are expected to complete a PhD dissertation within a four-year period.

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers a salary of 2,042 gross per month in the first year to 2,612 gross per month in the fourth year (figures based on full employment). The full-time appointment is temporary for a specified period of four years.

Affiliation
The PhD candidate will be affiliated with ICOG (the Research Institute for the Study of Culture at the Faculty of Arts) and the Department of History, and will be enrolled in the research training program of the Graduate School for the Humanities.
The position requires residence in Groningen, 38 hours/week research and research training, and must result in a PhD dissertation. After the first year there will be an assessment of the candidates' results and the progress of the project to decide whether the employment will be continued.

Clarendon Scholarships 2011 at University of Oxford

The Clarendon Fund offers 100 full scholarships every year to academically excellent international graduate students at the University of Oxford.

Clarendon Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence and potential across all degree-bearing subjects at graduate level at the University of Oxford. Clarendon Scholarships cover tuition and college fees as well as a generous grant for living expenses. Scholars are chosen by experts in their field and places are highly competitive, with less than 10% of eligible candidates selected for the scholarship.

The first Clarendon scholars took up their places at Oxford in 2001 and since then, over 900 students from more than 60 nationalities have been supported by a Clarendon Scholarship.

VLIR-UOS Scholarships for Students from Developing Countries

VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from developing countries so that they can follow a master or training programme in Belgium. These scholarships cover all related expenses. Every year, VLIR-UOS awards up to 180 scholarships to first-year master students and 70 scholarships to training participants.

All programmes are specifically designed for people in positions of responsibility in civil society (e.g. universities, schools, NGOs, local communities, governments).

The target group for master programmes comprises students from developing countries. Training programmes are tailored to people from developing countries with a certain degree of professional experience.

Although these programmes are primarily oriented towards students and professionals from developing countries, they are also open to other people.

Applicants applying for both academic admission and a VLIR-UOS scholarship need to consider both the admission requirements and the scholarship criteria. Applicants applying for academic admission but not for a scholarship simply need to fulfill only the admission requirements of the host university running the programme.

The host university is in charge of the academic admission of applications. Study results will be taken into consideration during the selection, but the most important academic selection criteria are relevant professional experience and prospects for applying the acquired insights after return to the developing country. The academic admission requirements are specific to every programme. Please peruse the requirements from the relevant programme.

A joint selection committee of VLIR-UOS and the host university is responsible for selecting scholarships. The host university – not the applicant – forwards the scholarship applications to the VLIR-UOS secretariat if the academic admission requirements are met. The VLIR-UOS scholarship criteria relate to the qualifications required of all scholarship applicants and selection criteria evaluated by the selection committee. There are 75 scholarships for postgraduate students taught.

All international students (and students throughout the chain of islands and the Isle of Man) to pay for overseas and who are applying for a full-time taught Master’s course in September 2008 may ’s apply. But do make sure you have read the criteria for the award of a scholarship very carefully in order to assess your chances. Of course, as a minimum requirement for all our holders of university scholarships must have excelled in their previous studies

Each scholarship is taught postgraduate worth £ 3000 and will be in the form of a reduction in tuition fees. The scholarships for postgraduate studies are taught for one year only.

How do I apply?

First you must have formally accepted the offer on our part. The offer may be conditional or unconditional. Then you need to complete the application form and send it to the address indicated on the form before June 30, 2008. Please note that candidates from Nigeria, Pakistan and Vietnam should apply only through our agent in the country. There should be no extra charge for this service.
